Old Possum’s Children’s Poetry Competition 2009
On the theme of ‘Heroes and Heroines’ for children aged 7-11 years
Linking with the ‘Heroes and Heroines’ theme of National Poetry Day 2009
The young poets who won this year’s Old Possum’s Children’s Poetry Competition came to the Unicorn Theatre in London on 14 th December to enjoy a poetry gala celebration featuring poets John Agard and Roger Stevens. The children read their winning poems on stage and received their book and cash prizes from John and Roger.
All the prize-winning poems are featured on the site, including those from our winners overseas. The theme this year was ‘Heroes and Heroines’.
Carol Ann Duffy, Poet Laureate and Chair of the judges, had this to say, ‘We had a wonderful and absorbing time choosing the winning poems. We were impressed by the range of subject matter and we were particularly bowled-over by the poems from the International Learners. We left our meeting convinced that the true beginnings of poetry are to be found in writing by children.’
